How to IRL stream from your iPhone without dropping

Quick answer

IRL streams drop when the phone's upload dies for a few seconds: tunnels, crowds, elevators. Leave quality on Automatic so Swae lowers the bitrate before the connection gives out, and stream through Swae Relay. It bonds Wi‑Fi and cellular, and when the signal still goes, viewers see your own Reconnecting screen with your chat instead of an offline player. When you're back, it's the same broadcast.

Why IRL streams drop

A live stream needs a steady upload. Walking around, yours isn't steady: one moment you have full bars, the next you're in a tunnel, a packed stadium, or an elevator. Sent straight to Twitch, Kick or YouTube, a gap like that leaves viewers staring at a frozen or offline player, and many of them leave. If the gap is long enough, the platform ends the stream and your VOD splits in two.

There are four things that fix it, and they work best together.

1. Leave quality on Automatic

Swae watches your connection while you're live. When it slows down, Swae lowers the bitrate before the stream breaks, and raises it again when the network recovers. It's on by default (Quality: Automatic). A slightly softer picture for a few seconds beats a frozen one.

2. Bond Wi‑Fi and cellular

Swae Relay uses SRTLA, the bonding protocol IRL streamers know from BELABOX. Your iPhone sends the stream over Wi‑Fi and cellular at the same time, and the relay puts it back together. When one connection fades, the other carries on, and your viewers don't notice.

3. Put up a screen when the signal goes

Sometimes there's no signal at all. With Swae Relay, viewers then see your Reconnecting screen, with your Twitch and Kick chat on it and a timer, instead of a broken player. With a weak signal, they see Reconnecting instead of a picture that's breaking up, and your camera again once the signal is good.

You design the screens yourself: Reconnecting, and the ones you put on yourself, Be right back, Privacy, Starting soon and Ending. Turn on Moderators run the screens from chat, and your Twitch and Kick moderators can switch them with !brb, !privacy and !back.

4. Come back to the same broadcast

The relay keeps your broadcast open while your phone is away, for as long as you choose: 5 minutes, 15, 30 or an hour. When your phone reconnects, viewers see your camera again on the same broadcast, so your VOD stays in one piece. If you're away longer than that, the broadcast ends by itself.

Set it up

  1. Set up your platform. In Swae, tap SET UP on the camera and connect Twitch, Kick, YouTube or another platform. (Guides: Twitch, Kick, YouTube.)
  2. Start the free trial. Open Settings, then Swae Relay (under Go live), then See plans, and tap Try 5 hours free. No card needed. Your stream now goes through the relay (the Swae Relay page shows it as Through Swae Relay).
  3. Design your screens. Open Screens viewers see and make Reconnecting and Be right back your own: words, a picture or a clip.
  4. Choose how long you can be away. Under When they show, set Reconnecting ends the broadcast after.
  5. Go live. Tap GO LIVE, check the review, and go. Your free hours start with this broadcast.

Tips for the street

What it costs

Swae is free. Swae Relay is $9.99 a month or $79.99 a year in the US, with no hours limit under fair use, or 10 relay hours for $3.49 that never expire. Every Apple Account gets 5 hours free to try it. The relay also sends your one upload to up to 6 platforms at once (see multistreaming).

Questions

What is SRTLA?

SRT Link Aggregation: a way to send one SRT stream over several connections at once, like Wi‑Fi and cellular, and put it back together on a server. It's what keeps bonded IRL streams up when one connection fades.

Do I need a backpack or bonding hardware?

No. Swae Relay bonds the connections your iPhone already has, Wi‑Fi and cellular.

What happens if my phone is gone longer than the time I set?

The broadcast ends by itself, after showing your Reconnecting screen for that long. Platforms don't want endless screens.

Does it work with Kick?

Yes. Swae Relay sends to Kick, Twitch, YouTube and other platforms, up to 6 at once.

How long can a relayed broadcast last?

Up to 12 hours. Start a new broadcast to keep going.
